The film depicts a period in Nepela’s life when he returned with a gold medal from the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, his greatest sporting success to date. Back home, he is not only welcomed by fame, but also by the reality of the communist regime. Although everyone treats him like a celebrity, the sensitive Ondrej longs above all to escape this golden cage, which he finds uncomfortable. He wants to live freely and in harmony with who he feels he is. However, at the last minute, he is denied the chance he was promised to join a professional ice revue and is ordered to participate in the next world championship instead. Disappointed, Nepela must find new motivation, as well as come to terms with the tragic death of his best friend, the figure skater Hana Mašková.
